Welcome to Coast Guard Lieutenant Junior Grade John Bannon's San Diego State University's Educational Technology (EDTEC) portfolio. As the short story above describes, the year was 2005, and as a supervisor I was just beginning to understand EDTEC applications for the field. In the example from my past job, my team and I developed a multi-faceted inspection checklist for containers carrying explosives. The checklist could be updated, printed, and used as an informational training tool.
My experience with EDTEC began with the 2005 Coast Guard Human Performance Technology (HPT) Seminar held in Williamsburg, Virginia. Attending the seminar, I observed a variety of performance and training improvement ideas, including a key note speech on motivation by Dr. John Keller. It was not long before I applied for graduate studies in HPT. I was selected in 2006, followed by acceptance to the EDTEC program at San Diego State University.
Tomorrow's Lessons Today
The Coast Guard was founded on training, as our motto Semper Paratus "always ready" outlines. With 10 years of service, as both enlisted and as an officer, I have witnessed the value of performance based instructional design for increasing confidence and satisfaction. The results are observable and measurable: Higher retention rates, increased safety, and improved morale.
Armed with my education and dedication to improving the performance of the greatest sea-going service in the world, I will return to Active Duty at my new HPT position at Training Center Petaluma, CA. As author Bertha Calloway so aptly penned about influence: "We can not direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails," I to look forward to adjusting the training and performance sails for the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard.
